Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, Bulgaria
About
The number one tourist attraction and popular photo opportunity in Sofia is St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It was built in a beautiful Neo-Byzantine style and is one or the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. It is located just in front of Sofia's parliament building and apparently it contains the largest collection of orthodox icons in the Europe. I ended up here after finishing a free 2 hour walking tour provided by the gorgeous Kristina from Free Sofia Tour. I highly recommend listening to her views on Bulgarian history. The cathedrals name was changed briefly during the first world war to "Cyril and Methodius" as Bulgaria was opposed to Russia but its original name was reinstated afterwards. It can hold 10,000 people inside according to Wikipedia.
