Clock Tower, Sighișoara, Romania
About
I took this photo last week while walking down a popular street in a small medieval fortified town in Romania. This wonderful little UNESCO protected town called Sighișoara is well known as the birth place of Vlad III Drăculea who is today often referred to as Dracula.
He was born in 1431 in a house near the clock tower and later became famous as Vlad the Impaler after the unique way he killed up to 100,000 people (by impaling them on a spike and letting gravity and their own weight slowly kill them).
In the past the town was referred to in german as Schäßburg and the germanic feel of the town is unavoidable. In the 12th Century thousands of (what would be today) germans settled here and while so much has been preserved, at times it feels like you're back in a small german town.
