Escadaria Selarón, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
About
Today I did a bit of sight seeing in Rio today and came across these steps while making my way from Santa Teresa to Lapa. As you can see what makes the steps interesting is that they are covered in thousands of coloured tiles. The tiles were collected from across the world and feature cartoons and photos of many famous cities and celebrities. I even saw a Michael Jackson, Guns'n'Roses and a Princess Diana tile. The once ordinary steps were turned into art by a local resident artist called Jorge Selarón. He was unhappy with the steps to his house so one day in 1990 he just started on a mad mission to brighten them up. I wonder if the councils in England would allow this!
