Huaco Del Luna carvings, Trujillo, Peru
About
Made a last minute dash this morning to Huaco de la Luna just outside Trujillo. The ruins of this temple have been well preserved by Peru standards and show some shocking revelations about the Moche culture and what happened here. The Moche people who were around Northern Peru in 100 to 800 AD worshiped octopus like sea gods and performed human sacrifices. Imagine the scene in the film Apocalypto where they capture the defeated villagers and sacrifice them. Scary stuff. Apparently archeologists found remains of hundreds of bodies which showed signs of human sacrifice there. Paintings and carvings were also found depicting rituals of human sacrifice. There is even a painting of a naked female being attacked by a large cat.
