Lost Inca City, Machu Picchu, Peru
About
Woke up at 4am today to head up to Machu Picchu's lost city, a pre-Columbian 15th century Inca site. The site is so well hidden high up in the Andes mountains it was completely missed by Spanish conquerors and wasn't rediscovered until 1911 by American Yale university professor Hiram Bingham III. People believe he was later the basis for the fictional explorer 'Indiana Jones'. Despite my early start, to my dismay I arrived to find the site covered in a thick cloud of grey mist. Eventually at around 8.40am the heat from the rising sun cleared the cloud and the lost city revealed itself at last. The view here is from the Guardhouse. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was named one of the new wonders of the world in 2007.
