Registan Square, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
About
In the heart of Samarkand is the spectacular Registan square. The ancient city of Samarkand has been on the UNESCO list since 2001. There are three madrassahs on the square which were erected between 1417 and 1660. The importance of Samarkand city changed throughout the oncoming years which led to the buildings falling into disrepair. Earthquakes, wars and other outside factors also didn't help. The three buildings would not be here today had they not been rescued by the USSR in the 20th century.
Today the square is a vibrant tourist center with visitors from all over the world. Inside the madrassahs there are no pupils or lessons but instead tourist shops and even a cappuccino bar!
