Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Mtskheta, Georgia
About
Yesterday I ventured out of Tbilisi to the old capital Mtskheta. I and my friend Beka visited this church "Svetitskhoveli" which is the main orthodox cathedral in Georgia and apparently the burial place of Christs' robe. It's also the final resting place of many Georgian kings.
Svetitskhoveli is still regarded as an endangered landmark by many although it has survived a variety of adversities over the centuries. A lot of its priceless frescoes have been lost due to being whitewashed by the Russian Imperial authorities. It's the second biggest cathedral after the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi centre.
There were quite a few tourists knocking around for a Friday afternoon and some couples (I assume locals) were having some wedding photography done.
