Tian Tan Buddha, Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, HK
About
Also known as the 'Big Buddha' (wonder where that came from) this is one of the 5 big Buddha statues in China. It is made from bronze and is a supposed to be Buddha Amoghasiddhi. It is a very popular tourist attraction and the village of Pnong Ping where it is placed on Lantau Island is well worth the visit if not for the really long cable car journey to get there. It was about 30 minutes to get to the village via cable car and I witnessed some great views of the green hills on the way and of the sea below. I arrived late afternoon just as the sun was disappearing behind the statue and the sky was changing to a lovely shade of purple. The Buddha took about 3 years to build and was finished in 1993.
